I do enjoy whenever we get chapters like this, that give insight into regional differences in food styles. I think it's fun.

This one really only touched on udon, so it's a little lacking.

I agree. Despite the many justified complaints about the manga's handling of the characters and the story at times, when it's not really about the scientific accuracy and stuff, I always appreciate the fact that I get to learn the surprising differences and variations of Japan's cuisine that even native Japanese readers might not know.

For example, I think I'll never even know (or only very later on from other sources) that Okinawan cuisine is famous for its apparent role in extending life expectancy if it wasn't for this manga.

My absolute favorite chapters tend to be the " We are having a everyone can join contest "

Friendly banter, alot of illustrations of food, little interpersonal drama. My absolute fav of those might be the hidden menu one.

I was also surprised that Okinawa ate the most pork, cus I always presumed that pigs/pork wasnt really a thing in Japan before the Black Ships and trade, so thats on me for not checking the history books more thoroughly.. I mightve been thinking of another animal.

Ah yes, the Culture Department Show-and-Tells, also a favourite of mine. They occur once every few volumes, and represent Oishinbo at its least pretentious.

I wanna celebrate the people's individual eating quirks. They're what give us character.

I think because Okinawa was originally an independent kingdom (Ryukyu Kingdom) and still maintained its tributary relationship with China even after it was invaded and became part of the Satsuma Domain, it was never subject to most of Japan's famous edict of prohibiting meat consumption, hence Okinawans having a longer history of eating pork compared to the Japanese mainland.

I love the Rice Buddies Show-and-Tell the most! While Yamaoka's rant about the dangers of rice imported from the US is indeed in the YMMV category, I personally always want to try the bonito shiokara with rice as depicted in that chapter. Pairing plain white rice with something savory is always heaven for me.
