Not sure how I feel about all these throwaway jokes about Shizuka being "actually just a regular girl" in a yuri manga about "tomboys/bokukkos/orekkos" (ie gender non-conformity). Shizuka could be an enby, but the story both does and doesn't entertain this idea genuinely. The only thing the character has said this whole time is "I'm above gender" and the only thing any other character has said is "wow this woman is fucking weird".

I get the sensation that the author is using the aesthetics of gender nonconformity as a comedy prop without any connection to or conference with the people who actually live these lives.

I get a similar sense, but part of it could be different cultural expressions of gender issues in different cultures. Since I'm not from Japan I'm probably projecting my experiences onto it. It makes it hard to spot what connection to actual living trans folks the author might have; they could have them, but in a way that looks unrecognizable to me.

There's another way to approach it, and that is using the gag humor as a way to 'normalize' their 'abnormal' behavior. It's not like the use of gender as a comedy prop is overtly critical of trans persons. It's humanizing them, in an exagerrated and comedic way. But at the same time, it's explicitly calling them 'unusual' in a room full of heteronormativity. Bit of a mixed message. To quote The Muppets; "They're wierdos! But, they're nice wierdos."

Japanese people often view this stuff very differently from the western folks. I would not be surprised if the author treated it as a complete joke and that was just it.
