This would actually be a good, if kind of sad, way to connect the two protagonists - if he gets infected he'll have more reason to seek her out, because he can't do it by himself anymore, and she'll have someone around who keeps reminding her that being passive isn't going to work... But I assume he and she are immune though - they've been exposed a bunch already
