I am guessing the former saint lost her title due to sloth, an unwillingness to work hard and coasted on her prestigious job. She was easily overwhelmed by parallel casting of a basic light spell. The type of spellcasting reminds me of Fern in the Frieren anime.

Meanwhile the former sage is both arrogant and willing to dabble in corruption and summoning demons. No surprise the gods didn’t want one the few sages in the world to be like that.

What is even the purpose of the duel? The gods themselves decided the class change, so I highly doubt a duel would make a difference, regardless of outcome.

In worlds where gods' existence and actions are in doubt, we already see religion having a huge influence.
In worlds, like this one, where they are demonstrably real and take observable action, who in their right mind chose to very directly deny their choices? In particular when it's about something they very directly are the source of?
