The manga never explained anything about the nature of the 'pollution' that ruined the last village, and became the reason to have those moonlight grass flowers. The only other kind of pollution mentioned in this manga is sewage from early chapters, making me think that the reason why they had to abandon their previous village is because it got too stinky from everyone just pooping all over the place.
