I would argue manga shouldn’t be embarrassing, making it too self-indulgent leads to slop like insert name of any modern isekai here. The issue is never putting unfiltered feelings on paper, but rather exercising restraint when choosing what to show audiences.

Of course, this is already a purely fantastical scenario since it assumes a girl would ever talk to him, so what does any of this matter…

It's embarrassing in general to put your own ideas out there. If they held back too much based on what they found "embarrassing" it could easily end up having no features that make it stand out, which is just as bad as it being too self indulgent.

Page 4 must be only giving you snippets of the conversation, because that really didn't flow when I read it. Either that or I need more coffee...

To the rest of the chapter does our Gal maybe have a future as a manga editor?

The readers are also kings. I do like that Tsubaki was the sole King willing to give Otakei her honest opinion and analysis.

As Ashihara described it all it takes is one person to truly connect with your feelings and intentions as an author. Tsubaki became that person for Otakei and in doing so gave him the breakthrough he needed for reaching the countless kings out there, something that had always eluded him.

At this point Tsubaki has been his emotional anchor, so having her serve as the catalyst for conquering his greatest weakness is well constructed. The fact that she went out of her way to voice every unfiltered thought genuinely moved him. You can see the joy written across his face. He started drawing because of her and he continues because he wants to create something she will find interesting.

This also matters thematically. A major thread running through the story has been running away, or more precisely finding the courage to stop. Otakei fled from manga before rediscovering his love for it. Tsubaki walked out of her late husband's funeral. And she herself was called out for dodging the responsibility of fair criticism toward Otakei's work. Yet she confronted that fear head on and delivered exactly what he needed to hear. He does not need yes men surrounding him. We already know she is his number one supporter but that devotion should never become a crutch. True support lives in the balance between encouragement and honest critique, and this moment proved she understands that.

Thanks for the translation!

"You should respect the feelings of the readers but also not hold yourself back from writing what you want due to a sense of shame"

That's a pretty fair sentiment.
While I don't think one should be too considerate of the audience, you can't also be wasting their time and goodwill (like the author of GraPara!... God, what a dumpsterfire).
And yet, you need to be proud of what you're making. What's the point in hating your own art?

Saint Seiya daddy words in that manga are the cold hard fact, how being a mangaka means that someone is FIGHTING againts the whole japan mind/readers. The reader can be the reason you will die trying, or will be the 1 having your back to be your DIEHARD FANS.
Every mangaka dreams of to be the latter, but most of mangaka axed in tatters for not having what it takes for the BIG FIGHT..

You think the myriad copy-paste isekai are the works in which authors get to be self indulgent?
I seriously doubt it.
I don't think authors can even get indulgent in doujinshi nowadays. Too much money involved
