This is one of my favorite chapters in all Oishinbo. It's cliche, you know exactly where the story is going, but it's executed with so much genuine emotion that I can't help but smile.
The 3 main characters here are solidly portrayed. Yamaoka is still dense and tactless, but doesn't exhibit any of the pretentious elitism he falls into sometimes. He's just clueless but earnestly cares for his friends. Kurita gets a bit of inner conflict due to Yamaoka's perceived coldness, but bounces back to full appreciation after she realizes what he's been up to. Dan shows off his well-meaning chivalry, and while he is a bit pushy here, he recognizes that his actions are more superfluous than Yamaoka's, and withdraws coolly to try again another day.
It's just, an excellently matched clash of personalities.
Bonus fact: The original French part of the menu was littered with typos. I edited over them to make the reading experience less distracting.
