I knew it was gonna happen. I didn't know exactly when but I just kinda knew. I'd hit the final chapter as I'm doing this project and the emotion would swell from within me but... hoo I was still not expecting it to hit me. Just this profound feeling of accomplishment but also tremendous sadness. Like I'm sure it was for many here, Akira Toriyama's work was my gateway into the wide world of anime and manga.
Of course that was primarily through Dragon Ball Z though it was because of my love for that series that I sought out the manga, the original anime and so much more. At first, I think like a lot of people, I enjoyed it because it looked cool and had awesome fights and music and so on but as time has gone on? I've grown to appreciate the series beyond that and in that time, I've become a major fan of Toriyama's work.
Which I always kick myself over because truth be told, this only happened because of that fateful day in March of 2024. I still can vividly remember where I was, the stunned "WHAT?!" I let out upon reading the news followed by repeated utterances of no before rushing to Wikipedia and immediately being greeted with the "This article is under supervision for the subject has recently died." message and then just sinking back in my chair as I felt my heart shaking. For the rest of that night, I couldn't sleep. I just stayed up watching the tributes come in and tried to listen to my favorite DB music as I broke down. For the next couple of days while I would get proper sleep, the breakdowns would keep happening. It genuinely felt like a part of my core, of who I was just died.
Then I remembered the frenzy it put me in. I remembered just looking into all this Toriyama manga that had been put out in every language but English and with nobody seeming to take the reins, I remember the moment I kind of just went "No, you're doing this." and bear in mind, I was NOT a professional and I still am not. The disclaimer exists for a reason but for me? I really just wanted more of his work to at least be readable, to where people had a chance to see that the man did more than just Dragon Ball and in that time? It led me to Dr. Slump.
To me, Dr. Slump has basically changed the way I look at all of Toriyama's manga, especially Dragon Ball to the point where it ACTIVELY frustrates me to know that the series that made him famous in Japan is only looked at as a curiosity so in a way? I kind of felt this attachment to the series that went beyond what you'd get out of simple manga to the point where this thing, this continuation that had LONG been out-of-print and was not really made by Toriyama at all and just had him supervising and approving ideas I felt hellbent on seeing to the end and as I got through the chapters, it kind of was donning on me just how significant it was that I was the sole guy putting this stuff out there now and when I got to that final chapter? It just all hit that I'm done. This part of Slump's legacy, of HIS legacy, is readable for western audiences. I mean, for goodness' sake, I even sought out the bonus chapter I was that dedicated to ensuring this was complete and now that it is... only one thing to say.
Thank you all for reading and Toriyama-sensei, I hope you've been enjoying your rest.
