Man, I dunno, but I don't see how this manga series "became another shitty shoujo", and that's a little mean of a remark, lmao.
I mean. Reading through ch 7 and 9 (vol 3), I just saw a typical shoujo with some clichés here and there... but with the added layer of Aoi (the FL) being paraplegic. You have your jealousy issues, you have Ryuuta (the ML) also needing to understand that some things are not going to be as easier as when Aoi was able to walk... and your typical high school shoujo romance. And, like, yeah? And, to be honest... is that
really bad? It doesn't have to be a perfect high school shoujo romance (and, let's be real, there's not many, either, and it's totally subjective). Not everything needs to be a drama like Perfect World, if you feel me. It's fine to have a wheelchair user, that is a teenager girl, going through the usual shoujo tropes, you know? Something about representation and awareness, all in all (especially by the time this was published...
2001, Perfect World is from the mid-to-late
2010s, and from the looks of it, not much changed in a decade or almost two decades by the time it finished... I ignore how the concept of "free barriers" is going well in Japan, right now, but I hope for the best) .
A little bit of digging, I went to the Wayback Machine to see the translators' blog from back in the day, and this is what the group offered to mention about the skip between vol 3 to 6 (a comment made in March 12, 2014):
"It's because long ago we had several translators working on this project and the only one who turned in her work was [TL 1]. And we've yet to find another translator to help us translate this project so we thought it would be better to go ahead and release it then hold on hoping that someone would come along."
A little bit unfair, if you ask me, but that's how things are (doesn't help that it was a joint project, so... imagine releasing what you have because the other translators working on the project were busy with life and what not). Tbh, the description at the start of vol 6 (ch 14) kinda tells you that not much tends to happen (just time still progressing), as if you aren't missing much, but... what a shame. And I don't think this might ever been picked, again, either for continuing or even as an official license.
