Hannibal can't do politics, and hesitates where following through would ensure lasting victory.
Yes, he brought Rome to her knees, and yet he refused to slit her throat, let her stand and eventually utterly destroy his (morally questoinable even  then) homeland.
He will likely be a noble enemy Astaroth will have to kill personally before subjugating the ant princess.

Is the princess from that other lord who lost to the ants still asleep or what? Because there's no way MC can be doing whatever he's doing if she awakes for the first time since what essentially was her kidnapping and I assume MC doesn't have her in a dungeon so she would've been knocking on all the doors or wandering the castle

You say that like it was a conscious choice to let Rome survive. He knew his army couldn't siege Rome itself and wanted to fight a war of attrition. He couldn't because other generals couldn't defend the homeland, never getting reinforcements and was recalled only to lose ending the 2nd Punic war. Hannibal def wanted to kill everyone in Rome.

"Don't tell anyone I told you," says the goddess, and he immediately tells Hannibal "yeah, the goddess told me". Some schemer he is. He could have at least tried a half truth like "I have been scouting the ants" or a vague "after our last meeting, I knew we'd see each other again."

Maou a stronger man than me. If I heard Hannibal Barca I would've panicked because I'd think there is no win condition besides through attrition

But still, having one of the most brilliant generals of antiquity is still a must. The only thing I didnt know about Hannibal was that he was a lolicon.
