thought they were going to go with the red thread only creating straight couples so the girls have to navigate being gay in a explicitly heteronormative society. Now the thread seems kinda pointless, MC could simply not be sure if she can return same sex romantic feelings with the same plot now.

The plot is actually better than the classic heteronormative society. The plot here is that the main character had her parents be in a relationship without having them united by the red thread of destiny but they ended up divorcing. MC got told that their parents got divorced because they weren't united by the thread and that's why they failed in their marriage, so MC wants to prove that their parents were really in love and that is not necessary to be united by the thread of destiny for a love to be real and last for a long time. Very good plot and feels refreshing.
