Why does he still feel bad about it? She was the one in the wrong. Like the friend said, she acted on her thought and she should dump her friend for what she did. This mc is getting me mad, like dude why are you acting all nice. Hopefully she gets what’s she coming, especially since her parents approved of their marriage

Can you try not be a doormat for like 20 minutes, please?
It's the type of man Sasuga likes I guess?

so we really getting ted mosby route with this arc.
friend was right though ... being that good really makes you sick, but there will be a moment when all his repressed anger will escape, hopefully it doesn't f*ck his next relationship

This chapter almost made me want to join Team Fujiko. Taking a five hour train ride (or a flight) to come comfort the old friend your bestie just dumped is a hell of a gesture.
for a sec I thought she was gonna help him release a little stress hahaha

If Mine listens to Hiromi and abides by his request, then she's not really any better than he is in that context, in my mind.

She, and all of the other people who Nonoka, should be free to form their own judgments and act according to their own agency when it comes to how they treat Nonoka. Hiromi being a doormat is his own business; Mine owes him nothing, and certainly doesn't have to do more than acknowledge that he is indeed a doormat.
She proved as much when she told him to cut the pity party bullshit and asserted that he and Nonoka are in no way similar. So my headcanon, whatever else happens, is that she writes off Nonoka, spreads the word to the rest of the friend group as to what Nonoka pulled, and they all are left free to decide whether she's worth interacting with. After all, Nonoka decided that her ex was worth losing her entire support base up to and including her own parents. So it wouldn't even be a surprise if everyone ostracized her.
So if she listens to Hiromi and treats Nonoka nicely and forgives her for such cowardly behavior, then that's Mine acquiescing to being as much a doormat as Hiromi is in letting others decide her actions for her.

I get it's Sasuga's usual shtick to make her male characters this egregiously pitiful, but I really hoped this would be a case of him actually getting angry and lashing out as a result. Instead he's just turned inward and gone "oh woe is me I guess I deserved this" and it's almost insulting just how little he's changing as a character because of it. I thought this would be the point where he'd get fed up with continuously trying & failing at relationships because he keeps doing the same thing expecting a different result, but perhaps Sasuga Kei is not actually aiming for meaningful progression for these characters or for this story.

You can write a trashy melodramatic soap opera that still treats its characters like realistic people, and I'd argue the story would be better for it if they were allowed to do more than have the same reaction every time to bad shit happening to them.

I actually really liked this chapter. He's grieving and being illogical, fighting the will that he recognized to go after Lily, clinging to a last hope when he runs to the door, will be interesting to see how he moves foward.

He does need to express his frustations, treating anger as something purely bad and that should never be expressed is damaging to one's own balance. We get angry, we have the right to sometimes, and that's where Mine is such a great friend and character here. He's too nice, inhumanly nice. She might consider not completely ostracizing Nonoka, but that trust she had is definetely broken, she might just preserve appearances, from how she expressed it that true friendship is over.

For we to see progress, again I think he needs to change his reactions to a less rehearsed version of himself, he's lost in the plot (I hope Sasuka doesn't too lol).

In a less serious note, I expect a bloodbath in the sharehouse now that the one hurdle is gone :haa:

Isn't it more of a cultural thing to not rock the boat and keep one's feelings hidden?

Even accounting for that, Hiromi's going above and beyond what you'd reasonable expect to the point I'd call it a significant character flaw, that he bottles everything up to this extent. Especially as doing so is, arguably, part of the overall reason behind his continued failure at obtaining that 'perfect family dream' he claims to aspire to.
There's nothing healthy about the degree to which Hiromi is refusing to actually validate his own emotions, or the degree to which he lets everyone around him get away with their transgressions against him with no pushback or consequences. And I don't think chalking that up to "Japanese Cultural Propriety" is doing anyone any favors, either, because Japanese cultural sentiment isn't a monolith.

Mine herself calls Hiromi out in this very chapter, after all, and expresses why his mentality is so objectionable. That right there shows it's a Hiromi Thing, not a Japan Thing.

Anyone else feel incredulous about Anju in this chapter? She caused all of this shit and it doesn’t even occur to her that she should feel guilty about it.

I am still on team “anyone but Lily“, but Nonoka and Anju have also made my “no” list
