In the end, I'm a Yoshizumi Wataru fan. She's one of the grand dames of shoujo and I love her stuff. In my mind I know she has weaknesses, but I just can't feel it in my gut.
So....still no one to finish this in English? ^^ It's not as good as the original Marmalade Boy but I am curious how it ends....although I could try reading it in Spanish, but it's not that good.
I haven’t finished the original story yet, but yikes talk about bad parenting. This is so confusing for their kids.
For the sake of completeness, I hope someone does finish this one day. Cant judge it until I know the full story. 😅
Finally finished after reading the initial chapters' fan tl's of over a decade ago, and I can finally move on.
Uhm. It's... not very good.
I will say, though, I was only motivated by curiosity to read this, because I had this in my "Plan to Read" for ages, and was glad it was completed (albeit, in Spanish), and since I have Marmalade Boy still fresh in my mind, why not.
That was my mistake, lol.
W/o spoilers, the only thing I can comment about this "not being very good", it's because I feel it's a rehash from the original Marmalade Boy premise, but much more convoluted than what Yuu and Miki go through, and if I thought Yoshizumi wasn't quite a good writer in the original series (not a fan of the way she wrote some characters, not a fan of some pairings)... WELL, what can I expect in Little?
What I mean by convoluted is that, I can give it a pass with Yuu and Miki - they aren't blood-siblings, their respective parents just happened to be old flames and exchanged partners. But with Saku and Rikka (Rikka is the actual name for Yuu's sister, Ritsuka is a mistranslation due to furigana misreading), they were raised together in the same roof, and Rikka even originally thought that both marriages were her four parents (and as typical of both Matsuura and Koishikawa marriages, they never explained this to them up until they were in late Elementary school) and that Saku was his brother (and with both Yuu and Miki being a couple...)- it feels stupidly complicated? And a little more... "HMMM".
It plays the exact same notes from Marmalade Boy, and although you could throw logic outside the window with this fact... these kids/pre-teens don't feel as middle-schoolers, either... like, at all?
Sure, teenage romance is messy. But, I dunno, man... I know teenagers can be very smart and such at a certain age, but... this specific new cast never felt like middle schoolers to me for some odd reason? and I wanted to smack their heads so badly at times with how "deep" their talks about love where... ugh... (especially Rikka, girl, what the hell were you saying at times about your crush towards Aoi and your need to be "apologizing to Saku" about stuff like this???)
That being said, leaving this aside, if you were expecting to read what happened to your favorite characters from the original series and see them as adults in cameos or whatever, you do you, but I think what Yoshizumi did with them here leaves much to be desired.
Wasn't a fan of her "they were together over 10 years, got married and ALL of THEM are having babies" ideal of them as 30-somethings, if I'm honest with you. Much of what they did was talking about their relationships' shake ups and the issue and solution of all of them was rooted in "having kids", which doesn't sit well on me, because it was apllied to EVERYONE with those issues. What does this say about Yoshizumi and her thoughts about being a 30-smth adult, about marriage and family is beyond me. Heck, even her original ideas for an alternative ending in the original series had much more interesting potential... than what we had here.
Almost, almost saying, "don't waste your time reading this, I bet fanfiction out there is better than what the original author did for a 20th anniversary project".
