I think you can just change DNS to Google's or cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 to unblock most restricted sites, also free but won't change your location if that's what you're seeking

What are you using vpn for in the first place? Theres the softether/vpngate from some japanese research project. Not sure what free vpn that isnt slow or taking your home isp into their node though.

changing dns wont kill your phone. You can also use 9.9.9.9 aka quad9.
