They argue along the lines of "Oh, the word meant originally no-place, which means it's totally impossible", "Look, I created a dystopic world that advertises itself as good, therefore, utopias bad", "It is completely unreachable and therefore not something we should bother going towards, I have a 14-year-olds grasp on human nature", "An utopia for one is a dystopia for another person", etc.
Like, the common interpretation of the term is "A unreachable vision of a good future". It would be very desirable if achieved, so it serves as a goal to strive towards.
What they do is: "Oh, it is impossible, therefore we can safely continue our path towards misery, as being a bitter jerk is mature and dreaming is for children, urgh. Did I tell you how adult I am?".
To be fair, without some miracle technology, I doubt any utopia could be reached without a dip in g'ol dystopia. Eggs and omelettes. But an utopia could very well be perfect for everyone, except some anti-social misandrists, who would want to bring it down just because.
