it's not a reddit thing. it originated on 4-chan, then migrated over to "the sharty" (breakaway website, made by "og 4-chan users").
originally, it was used to judge how good a Womack was, if it was bad, it was called coal, or brimstone, if it was good, it was called a gem or gemmy. it then slowly made it's way into tweeter to talk about the general quality of a post.
