Wait, "yuri" and "lesbian" mean different things?

@solstice258 Yes, "yuri", 百合, and "lesbian"("rezu", レズ, or sometimes "bian", びゃん, in Japanese) mean different things: the former means a really close relationship between two women (it doesn't matter which) while the latter equals to homosexual orientation.
Btw, aren't you using your old yuri thread? It'd be easier to find/post.

Yuri means Girls love(GL) and lesbian means being a homosexual girl, no?

Yuri is the name of the manga genre about sapphic relationships and lesbian is the name of the sexuality

Yuri definitely should not be given to just very close female relationships, as that is called simply just having a buddy. Its only yuri if its actually romantic, and side note, please only refer to yuri as the manga kind, never to real life relationships. You'll get beaten up.

Lowfyie answer is basically the common answer yuri fanatics who don't know Japanese nor have ever read Sappho give nowadays.

Maybe, but thats probably because when a yuri fan looks up yuri manga, they expect to see a sapphic relationship, not just gal pals.

I feel like with that there was a shift in how the word was perceived, using it for just female friendships nowadays feels like using "gay" to describe "happy"
