Huh. I recall hearing about this going away a while back on major US networks - I think General Motors had a service built into their cars for some years that was affected, among others. Surprised to learn it's still in use elsewhere.

It was kept in use due to having a better reach than 4G and 5G and thus being more useful for emergency services.
Some countries used 3G for that purpose instead, but 3G had worse voice quality, which is why 2G was kept instead

because 3G is already supported since the first Android.
