I'm not sure if I understood correctly, but for me, GL must have one of the following: 1) a proper love confession that is reciprocated, or 2) a kiss.

Without either of those, it's just bait and teasing, in my opinion.

As someone who doesn't like Yuri I'd like your explanation as to why they're different. Is it in the setting? How they approach the genre?

As I understand it, there used to be yuri and shoujo-ai. However, these terms are now considered outdated. Nowadays, everything falls under the umbrella of "girls' love."

As I understand it, yuri is strictly NSFW GL.

GL can be both be SFW and NSFW, as long as there is lesbian romance of any kind.

Either way, it's not worth having a feud about. You both love the same things, so it makes more sense to set aside whatever differences you two have and go back to enjoying the things you love. (y)

There's no official government body for this, so no one can provide a definitive definition that differentiates what means what.
It's all just a matter of majority public consensus.

Word meanings change over time, and you're dealing with a word that's been translated back and forth while the thing it refers to also evolves in its details.
The majority consensus is what you'll hear most often, but minorities can still hold differing beliefs.
This isn't law.
You're better off just making peace and moving on.

I could give you a long history lecture, but it's really not worth it.

The majority consensus that distinguishes usually defines Yuri as a larger umbrella for all relationships between females,
and GL as a subset within it for more mature relationships. (not just sex, but for more realistic relationships)

As I understand it, yuri is strictly NSFW GL.
I disagree. The distinction between yuri and shoujo-ai is that the romantic relationship is explicit, not implied.

Yuri does not necessarily mean porn or hentai.

But, again, nowadays, everything is GL.

GL as a subset
I always understood it the opposite way. GL is a superset that encompasses yuri and shoujo-ai and allows for relationships that are not explicitly stated (i.e., undertones and subtext). :thonk:

There's the thing, there's no law that stated one or another
Linguistically, both words are interchangeable, as they're both the result of their respective translations. You can simply choose one and be done with it. There's no need to make things more complicated than necessary.
One thing that historically true, however,
In Japan, the word Yuri appeared first before some people felt that the term was being misused by foreigners, which then led to the term girls love (ガールズラブ) appearing.
Oh, and the word shoujo-ai came from a whole different source and mean something very different.
