Is it a bit too much effort? Maybe. But it gives me that piece of mind that even if the english TL is absolute garbage, I can still hear and know what the characters are saying accurately.

This is also why I prefer fan TLers. Folks who do this because they are passionate and want to give to the community that access to a medium that they love...

shrug That's my thoughts.

But aren't fan TLers hit and miss, like much more than official ones? When they're garbage, they're really garbage.
I'm definitely also a fan of accuracy. Hate the idea of someone rewriting stuff for me.

I mean I get it. This is really more prevalent these days @MilkDrinker that its really a problem. I am really remembering the legacy TL groups like UTW and the like. Maybe URW when they did Chuunibyou. That took effort.

Heck, how about HorribleSubs? Tho to be fair, they just ripped very early crunchyroll subs and those where inaccurate before too. Inaccurate because they were new, not because the TLs were changing things.

Maybe I am just on a nostalgia trip, but these were the things of my childhood lol.

Heck, there is even Commie with the Monogatari series and Busou Shinki. Then there is the vaunted DokiDoki Sub group. I'm going through my old files that I have on an external storage device and I'm just remembering all these sub groups for anime.

When I have these examples then I see the current examples of official TLs which are stale and clinical (and at times totally inaccurate to the spirit of what is being talked about...)... its quite... interesting.

I have the same sentiment, maybe leaning towards the more extreme side where I genuinely believe these subhuman garbage do not deserve to live. A bit surprised, or maybe not, that you pulled up Kobayashi. That hot garbage was done by a very infamous retard who has desecrated multiple works, outright rewrote things because they are a bunch of talentless hacks.

Take a look at this. From an official lolcowlizer Good job not knowing the language you are paid to translate to, fucking asshat. This is, unfortunately, not the exception but rather the norm from what I have seen. If it's not the norm yet, they will use their social media presence and the army they pander to to bully you into silence.

Anime and manga are easier to cross check, as well as more consumed, so at least there is coverage of what these scumbags have done. Games are much more difficult to check, and don't get me started on visual novels. As far as I van remember, official VN localization has never been good. Maybe MangaGamer, not sure what else. But MG doesn't really cover big titles.

The thing is the consoomer mindset that "anything is better than nothing" and a lack of respect for the original materials allow for this kind of bullshit to thrive. You don't have to look anywhere far, just check MD comment section. In a sense, it's the degradation in audience attitude that disappoints me more rather than the things that produce trash.
