the moment it's hardest to control yourself, is the best moment to
That doesn't sound like advice, but more like an observation. I don't think this is going to help anyone with self-control issues.

I think your best bet is going to be aware of your goals and motivations on why you want to control yourself in the first place and to let your environment know, so that they can help you (trying to cut down on alcohol? It helps if your friends and colleagues know, so they don't invite you to the local bar.)

For sure, going cold turkey is usually always bad and results in relapse, small steps are crucial, but, if you could go cold turkey, it would be the best (it's wishful thinking), you see it a lot people go 100%, then burnout

Also want to add, self-control does seem universal in actions, if someone has an addiction, it's easier to get another

I'm not saying you should always go/don't go cold turkey in every situation. Everyone's situation is different. Someone who wants to watch their weight is in a completely different situation than someone who is addicted to heroin. That's why I said it's important to have your own motivations to reduce/stop doing something and have other people help/don't add to the problem.
