Yeah, I agree, but the sudden change is a bit weird.
I remember that years ago, people used to make fun of people like that. Now it seems like it’s suddenly become much more accepted and popular.

Cute anime boys are all cat boys. You can literally draw an anime face over a real cat's facial features and get one.

Possibly its popularization becoming more aggressive like this could be in the same vein and reminds me of how straight guy humor has for some reason turned into fetishizing femboys and doing gay stuff. Why? Reeeally couldn't tell you.
