Depending on the place and setting, but in general, in a noble-based society, a baron is very powerful in comparison to regular commoners. And since many nobles live beyond their means, a rich merchant baron can be powerful enough to force even higher-ranking nobles to obey. Real world...

Man, I'm getting kind of bored with all the family in-fighting. I wanna see him making deals with oil barons, royalty, different governments, armies etc etc. Writing has been on the wall for a while I guess, but this is gonna be all family intrigue isn't it..
