A reasonable explanation would be that the explosion kept reflecting and heating up the air/liquid inside his body until he popped like a balloon. It only specifies 'damage' aimed towards him so the heat produced transferred into his bodily fluids but then his body went and did damage to itself...

I've seen plenty of adaptations turn great into decent and okay to bad, but not once have I come across an adaptation that skips all the way from great novel to garbage comic.

Read the start of the novel, it actually says "each time he is discovered as the false evil". The adaptation pulls the bs of rewording the punishment so that people get baited. Novel looks like its paced semi reasonably and explains better so maybe can blame adaptation a bit? (not really)...

Most of us assumed that the system punishment activated for each individual DEED discovered. Now it's been revealed to be punishment for each person who discovers who he is and thus way less punishing and sucks out most of the tension. Maybe the novel made that clear from the outset 🤷‍♂️
