Why would they have included him. Aside from just delivering "the world is deeper and older than you know" what does he actually deliver to the plot? Nothing. It is a very good portion to cut. Similar how PJ fused Glorfindel's role in rescuing the hobbits and Aragorn from the Nine with Arwen's...
