You perfectly understood it, the manga is purposely ambiguous regarding who Aki's friend is in the end. My interpretation is, that it is an amalgam of the two brothers. Why else would the brother be interested in Aki suddenly when before he was very antagonistic.

Regarding the "friendly old heroes from epics were reinterpreted into lovers": as far as I am aware, most often it was exactly the opposite. Lovers were in the first translations by the puritanical folks now "really good friends". And then later translations were more truthful to the originals...

Are the "normal" characters so deformed to make it easy to distinguish between the manga-in-manga characters in opposition to the real-characters-in-manga? Because the artist shows again and again that they can draw on a high level, but somehow the characters looked in some panels like rough...

and yeah, full agree with your other comment. The original is great due to the contrast between the serious looking characters and their silly antics. The serialization is like a silly omake in contrast. Not bad in itself, but it just doesn't have what made the original great.
