As an adaptation, it's a little bad. The pace feels rushed, and the characters are a bit expressionless. I could understand more how the characters felt in the novel.
But as a stand-alone story, it's decent.
Everyone is a better romantic prospect than the male lead. The concubine? Wonderful. The prison guy? Amazing. The cute assassin we saw for like 4 panels? Marvelous. And then we have the emperor, a walking shit stain.
