I like this idea. But I would take it a step further and say that their god/godesses they believe in may have a hand in this. Like some devil stole the godesses' intended target for revelation and she got so peeved off by that audacity she did what you said.

dude... the author even put the defeat of the dragon off camera. The author made it as ambigous as possible. All we got is a slip and crash and then the MC poking the body with a sword and assuming the dragon died. I doubt anyone is going to actually die in this story.
