Damn this ending was quick... i was hoping for something a little more detailed about post war reconstruction policies, but it's still been a lot of fun. What a great series, if it ever gets an anime adaptation (unlikely but i can dream) a longer ending would bump it up to a 10/10 for me.

I interpeted it as that he genuinely feels this way, and this is actually the way he copes with his survivor's guilt. By apologizing constantly for living. Him crying and his general demeanor suggests he's not trying to abuse her but he's passing on a fucked up mindset.

the story reflects the transition of power from the "exceptional" into the hands of the masses. basically, the transition from feudalism into more centralized forms of government.

I like how the conflict boils down to standardization vs exceptionalism. In every story, the exceptional always win over the faceless enemy because that's what stories are for. However, at the end of the day most of us are normal people. Having people with power being essentially above the law...
