the story reflects the transition of power from the "exceptional" into the hands of the masses. basically, the transition from feudalism into more centralized forms of government.

I like how the conflict boils down to standardization vs exceptionalism. In every story, the exceptional always win over the faceless enemy because that's what stories are for. However, at the end of the day most of us are normal people. Having people with power being essentially above the law...
