The worst things about these chapters is realizing it'll be 7 more days till you get to read the next one. As for it being a silly way to test mages... Sorta. You do want them to have battle experience, and safe battles are an oxymoron. That said there does seem to be too much wasted...

I'm just waiting to find out how Fern captured her bird. Knowing this manga, she probably didn't use magic at all (and put food in the cage or something) and that was the "correct" way to do it - as a lesson not to rely on magic. What we're witnessing with Frieren is probably something...
