Haven't read any further just yet, but these couple chapters here make it obvious: They couldn't show Mackey, because he would look too much like Mickey. In the LN, Doing it this way still makes a lot of sense, though.

I do agree that the anime is better, but this bit that wasn't in the anime was pretty fun too.
