The beginning of the story takes place in the story's present day (2018) where Wanwan is married to a guy she doesn't love but has a kid with, and the segments that take place in school are flashbacks to her highschool days. The story isn't always concrete in delineating the time jumps.

After reading the most recent chapter I just want to acknowledge that you're right. My initial pessimistic read waiting for the other shoe to drop did obscure that there's been a slow tonal shift taking place that reads a little clearer now. Nice analysis!
