If you take away the implication of her actually fermenting her own leg, it's actually kind of a sweet story about a prankster lady trying to protect her store and her husband's legacy

Hell, let's add our own backstory. Her husband passed away after a car accident both of them were in. She survived, but lost her leg. Their natto store was a source of fond memories and she didn't want to give it up, so she dove into natto research and though it was painful to do, improved his recipe. Her joking with the lady was because she was familiar with her as a regular

Some places mix mayonnaise with mustard and paprika, call it their secret sauce, and treat the recipe as if it were the nuclear launch codes. Others will bill themselves as an earthy farm-to-table dining experience and rent an off-site loading dock 45 minutes away to conceal that everything they serve comes off of a Sysco truck.

And then there's this lady, who just instantly volunteers "The secret ingredient is corpse juice!" the instant one of her regulars displays the slightest curiosity about her production methods.

Japanese customer service really is on a whole 'nother level.

All of Yuuma's story up to this point can be found here since a couple of the top comments from Japanese readers from this chapter were wanting to have this all together to read in one place.
Going through all the Yuma stories...yeah, whoever it is he's staying with is goddamn abusive. Forgot that they stuffed him into the closet and just chuck food at him like an animal..

................... I wonder what natto tastes like. Sans old lady foot.

Fermented foods in general are considered exceptionally healthy for the stomach.
It's not really for me, but it's not offensively bad or anything. It kinda tastes like soy sauce with a gross aftertaste.
The strangest thing about it is definitely the sticky goo. It's almost like a mix of caramel and spiderwebs.

My immediate reaction is “holy shit he used to have so much more life(hah) in his eyes”.
This whole thing has really worn him back down. I guess it just shows how much hope hina gave him, with that little story. Makes sense that hers used to be the happier ones.

Also, he is absolutely telling these stories to a picture of his mother

I tasted Natto and... I think it's overrated. Not my cup of tea.
My BF actually enjoyed it.

Well in business I've heard of putting your best foot forward, but this is ridiculous...
Really nice chapter, I kept waiting for the reveal to be that the deceased husband's remains were being used (and that the Old Lady was a killer), but this was an interesting turn of events. The subtext might be that Yuuma is making a lot of self-sacrifices like the Old Lady in order to reach his end goal.

Oh no our girl is about to get kuru
Well as long the Old Lady doesn't start adding heads, it should be fine.
And for those who were curious, like myself, here's a quick video on how natto is produced:
