I think I see where this is all going now.
Spoiling supposition and guessing on my part:

So I think he dated Mio in the prime timeline. But something happened to Miku during or just after school, so Mio tried acting more like her sister, and that included quelling her own feelings and being with whats his name (I'm blanking. Deal with it). Because Miku came to like him herself during highschool. However, Mio felt like her feelings for him were inauthentic and this caused her to feel like she wasn't seen for who she was. Leading to that moment. And that the realization of her own feelings in this timeline at that moment will become foundational to her own sense of self and her own feelings. Broadly speaking. However they go about with this story I'm kind of here for till the end

That all said, I kind of like Mio and Miku equally. They're distinct in their own ways, but neither one is written to stand out more than the other and I kind of like that.
