I do think part of the story's point is how much gender identity is pretty illusory. The same traits that made Riko a shy... ugh, "beta" (I hate the people who use that term unironically) as a guy also make her completely moe as a middleschool girl. As to the others, they've been forcibly rewritten. I have a suspicion their original selves will become a big plot point.
