To the translators, I really appreciate the work you've been doing, but is there a reason you used "Burning Fire of Inner Strength" instead of the common translation of "Burning Inner Strength"?

The Kanji used was '火事場' - this best translates into 'scene of a fire'. We aim for total accuracy, but - in this case - 'scene of a fire' sounded an odd choice, so we chose to tweak it into 'burning fire'. The art of translation is just that; an art, not a science. There are times when a translator must take some liberties, and 'burning fire' seemed better to reflect the intent of the original sentence, which had a focal point on 'fire'.

Thanks!

I get what you're saying, but it's kind of weird to see that when Burning Inner Strength has been the go-to translation for years and even the translators of the 2011 series are still using it.

that is fair enough, but none of the translators are official, not even us. in the only english translation that is official, it was translated as "the fire" for shorthand from "KKD" (Kajiba no Kuso Djikara). while we respect other translators, we do not intend to copy them, especially when something is open to interpretation or even a mistake (not that this is a mistake on their part, but just interpretation). there will always be differences in our work to other people, but we think this is what makes things good for readers, because readers then have choice.

thank you again.

I guess, but "Burning Inner Strength" just feels like the better choice over "Burning Fire of Inner Strength", not just because it's what I'm used to, but it also gets the same point across without feeling as clunky.

i agree it may be clunky. i will talk to natsu.

we should be able to edit this chapter to "fiery inner strength".

we will use fiery inner strength going forward.

Not seeing "Burning" will still be weird, but I guess "Fiery Inner Strength" still works.

Just wanted to drop my five cents in and say while translation is an art, there are things in art that work and don't work in certain cases, and here, Burning Fire Of Inner Strength doesn't work in my opinion, especially since 火事場 has been used as a prefix for a lot of Kinnikuman's moves, like 火事場のブリッジ, Burning Bridge, or the one I translated, 火事場の大回転, Burning Super Spin. I'd say it'd be easier to just stick with Burning Inner Strength since it's the term fans know more instead of inventing a new name for it unnecessarily. That's just my opinion at least.

we respect your opinion.

we also will not do things just because someone else has done it differently. we try to translate as accurately as possible, based on our own japanese language and overall context, and we would rather be true to what we think and the source, than to copy other people because it is more convenient. we maintain the focus on that word is on 'fire'; 'burning' is a valid choice, but it is not our choice, and 'fire' is also a valid choice. we are happy with 'fire', and so long as it is not wrong, which it is not, we feel that is enough.

thank you for your concern. we will bear this in mind for future, but still use 'fire'.
