Got a shogi question about the ending of this climactic game. The dialog implies there's a forced mate all the way back when choosing S*3a vs B*3a last chapter, and based on the board position on p.132-134, it looks like G*1c Kx1c S*2b Rx2b Sx2b= K-1b R*3a Kx2b B*3a was played, and mate from there is clear.
HOWEVER, what if Tanio tries to escape up the board with K-2d instead of capturing the silver with Rx2b? Looks to me like he has a clear path for an entering king 2d-3e-3f-4g-3h especially since he still has that active threatmate with a Bishop and three golds in hand. That kind of dirty King-on-King play is in character for Tanio as well.
