I am choosing to imagine that the other bear:
1. Made it across town and ate so many acorns that he saw no reason ever to leave again.
2. Made it across town but was unable to find enough acorns, kept moving, and never came back because he went too far away.
3. Was captured alive, put into a zoo, and got enormously fat while making friends with the other animals.
or
4. Got halfway across town before being mistaken for a tall, overweight salaryman by a somewhat blind and deaf boss, and being pressed into service in town, quickly becoming used to human ways and too addicted to coffee to ever go back to the forest.
