I'm pretty sure there's a gulf of difference between some random dude with 40 acres and a title and Nigel, a knight who is apparently known in the Empire by both name and reputation. They could very well be knight-level students, but not all knights are peers.

I think knight in this case is a unit of strength, not nobility

That's what I'm getting at. Most knights are probably better than footsoldiers, but that doesn't make you able to hang with the playable characters. Knight-level strength isn't impressive compared to what's out there.
