Like he kept his distance with her but she didn't like that then joined hs and he got closer but she hates him for that?

Next chapter will tell, but I'm pretty sure she in middle school too didn't want him sticking that close? Wasn't that her whole reason to have a peaceful hs life?

I don't think she had the liberty to "choose" with how bad her grades. Probably the current hs was the only one she could get into.
