Aside from Ian's general obliviousness towards his father's actions and character, this scene in particular reminded me how many abusers tend to fit well within society on the surface, they can have jobs, friends and hold conversations well. There's many cases like that and with those types of people usually no one other than their victims would be able to actually tell that they could have a violent side to them so it's even harder for the victims to seek help because others just won't believe them
