The train driver needs to clear the debris in every case. I was once travelling by a small rural train that hit a car. There was no impact to feel, with the mass difference being so massive, but the emergency braking was naturally different from a normal one. The train staff had to remove any pieces from the tracks before the travel could continue. I suspect the car was totalled, judging by the pieces I could see from the train car window.
