The usual "conniving" MC would be far too smart to idiotically lash out at criminal without convicting evidence so the enemy can't turn the situation around on them.

In the end, they actually don't know if they're the culprits causing the ash, so it's important to confirm it first as is isn't impossible that they're a bunch of cranks who really believe what they say.

So what you're actually describing is not a restrained MC who is unheroic.. but just unintelligent. True example of an actual guy who treads the fine line of morals is Lloyd Frontera from The Greatest Estate Developer. Absolutely GOAT'd MC who is quick to retribution.. but methodically carries it out with absolute finesse.. especially against very tricky opponents like corrupt nobles who can dodge the law.

I like them because, despite MCs with morals also being capable of shutting up trash-talkers.. the more conniving MCs are different with their more cruel (and more deserved) forms of punishment when feasible.
