I was about to complain that there was no way the alphabet itself would change so drastically in just 100 years as to not be recognized, but the additional explanation works perfectly. It's always nice seeing an author who cares enough about his work to make sure things make sense.
Also thanks to the translators for translating all of that.

I think it's interesting that "Vampire" is treated more as this exceptional taxonomic group (similar to how protista is just all the exception that doesn't belong to the other taxonomy kingdom put together) in this story.

I really like whenever a story have this gap in understanding of the mechanism of how things work in the world, having that difference between what the layman understand and what the experts understands it as is so cool and refreshing
