I wonder if this is a language issue or whatnot but they are turning "I like X" into a fetish.
Kinda grating a bit.
That's often how people react if you say you like something and they don't quite agree with it. They make it out to be more extreme than it is.

Like I like long hair, but I wouldn't call it a fetish. I have been called out for it like some weird fetish that forces an unreasonable double standard on girls and what not. For the record, I have long hair, and I've never said which gender I prefer having long hair. Except both.

Does the author not understand the difference between a fetish and just something they like or what? Fetish is strictly sexual.
Fetish as defined is "a form of sexual desire in which gratification is strongly linked to a particular object or activity or a part of the body other than the sexual organs"
I just don't understand why they used the term if they weren't going to use it for it's meaning. It would even make sense for the premise of the series to ya know embarrass the dude.

I and Kyon approve it

In this scene in Disappearance it's not clear which parts are Kyon's inner monologue and which lines he's saying out loud. It's great.

The scene at the end of the Melancholy arc, in school after they wake up is good too:

the gradual transition to the ending song right after this line is great.

fanservice/entertainment aside, best to talk upfront about it, although i'd hope there wouldn't be ppl with 'deal breakers', kinda inappropriate for a fan to ask

I get the feeling most of these people don’t know what “fetish” means.

Also what a creepy fuckin fan letter blacklist that person asap.

...is it bad that my thought went to 'marketing opportunity' to be like "oh i'm really into stockings" and having a po box to get some free stuff 8D; idk how many ppl would reply in this but i can imagine some 'omake/afterwords' of some authors talking about certain stuff w/o being too personal (but let's hope the fan doesn't freak out like an idol stan if she's like "oh i'm dating my assistant" and humblebragging about him)

Yeah, it's bad enough that people constantly mix up 'kink' and 'fetish'. Now they're mixing up 'thing I kinda like' with a fetish.

(A fetish is something you need to have involved to fully be satisfied or - in extreme cades - even function sexually. Often it's an object, act, or a body part that's not generally thought of as sexual. A kink, on the other hand, is just a moderate to strong preference for something. It can be a milder version of a fetish, but either way, the difference is the person doesn't need it. As long as they're not harmful and are consensual, kinks are fine. Fetishes can be okay too, but are somewhat more likely to cause difficulty).

Right? These aren't fetishes. These are aesthetic preferences
So it's not even some specifically japanese thing.
Point fully cemented, weird choice from the author.

Thank for added info.
I was coming here to say that doesn't really count as a fetish, but I see I've been beaten to it. Good job, everyone.

Coming here from the dictionary to inform y'all that this is, in fact, a valid usage in Japanese; language shifts around over time and "I'm really into [thing] on characters" is not an especially bonkers colloquial usage and Akanabe's little sister using it with food and dishes is the only case in the chapter where it's being fully misunderstood.

These characters are not actually speaking English, much less in a way concerned with psychological rigor.
