such a good reveal, I love that this is about learning to cut out extraneous detail, it’s such a far cry from how she usually handles stories but it all still feels like Her right now

also, the paneling in the first half of this chapter was tight, so many fun but simple tricks to sell that this was a conversation between three people without using Akane’s usual loud expressiveness

I liked the panels where it's just a direct shot of Akane, without any special effects or anything, depicting it as you would actually see it in the audience.

I was interested in seeing how she wins this without making the audience laugh, though, and the revelation here seems less exciting than her somehow pulling that off.

Itll be interesting to see juxtaposition of the animated/dramatized sequences to the performance of just the text in this moment. I hope the adaptation gets to this point, and they go rotoscoped/fluid with the animation of the performance at this point

The usual interpretation of "don't make the audience laugh" is kind of pedestrian imo. There's a handful of futatsume in the story who could do that already. This interpretation imo is quite a bit more sublime. This also matches much better with all of the hubbub about Akane having "become rakugo". Her style had always been quite a subtle style, relying on her breadth of experience with everything under the sun to add bits of flavor to a story, and spice it up into something spectacular. It evolved a bit into her being able to weave multiple stories together, but still, while her depth and breadth of knowledge and skills are deep, she hasn't quite grasped the true core of the stories just yet. Now with this tale, she's "become" rakugo, having found the ability to execute the core of the story in a balanced, masterful manner, making it naturally funny on its own. Before, she was telling subpar rakugo brought to par with flair and talent. Now she's telling rakugo that's good without needing to rely on flair and talent. And once she adds that flair back in, her storytelling would be elevated to a whole new level.

"When a wise man points to the moon, the fool looks at his finger"

Just what is she cooking?
