I had a feeling we'd be getting her smile this chapter, after the brother's lamenting about his sister having to suppress herself while he took advantage of her talents to help them stay afloat in the wake of their parents' death.
But it also took Prince Alec very much by surprise, which is a good thing. Having those rumors dispelled for him, at least, prior to entering the Empire's territory is a good thing. He guarantees her safety, sure -- but better that he also believe in her fully, than have doubts & reservations.

I was surprised by Makis' moment of competence, though--forcing the mistress to bow her head, cutting off her blathering when any more would have cost her head. It's clear he's a royal in that he has some capacity to read a situation--but maybe I assumed he was truly stupid, and not merely callous and ignorant to the true value of keeping Eliza around.
But I expect that kingdom will start feeling the effects of Eliza's absence before too long. The reveal about counterfeit gemstones being circulated through the Empire means it's only a matter of time before that particular problem goes international--woe that the king was as weak as he is, that he didn't quash his son's idiocy in taking a mistress (or, I suspect, get to the bottom oh who she really is), because the best weapon to protect his realm's economy has just left in a fancy wagon with a direct competitor.

But I'm happy to see that Eliza isn't just a pushover, that her brother is well-meaning and also cognizant of his faults even with the best of intentions, and that Alec is more than his pretty, cold, harsh exterior countenance.
I think my real hope is some nitty gritty & granular "macroeconomics" involving the gemstone trade and some realism built into how governance and the economy go hand-in-hand when determining a nation's well-being and future. I like the interpersonal stuff and the bits of humor along the way, but I'm always a sucker for a well-written world that's fleshed out deep.

Thanks for the TL. Looking forward to more.

Yeah Makis rare moment of clarity means that he at least paid attention in class. Though I don't think he knew Priscilla was hanging around another prince's room before coming to this room. In this way Priscilla almost died on her own.

Priscilla gets points for being cunning (manipulating people to successfully out your rival is good for a ruler) not so much for self control though. She's too greedy. In her stunt to do this she practically almost died and lost a sacrificial pawn in a scheme she didn't need to commit.
