Honestly this was a good one shot. It was might've been designed just to leave you uneasy and unsure whether what was happening was real and whether something good or bad was happening. The whole nuance or atmosphere during the story was, like in the title, eerie. It creeped you out but enticed you to read on. Alice kind of mirrors those feelings. In the end, you feel neither horrified or pleased, the feeling is hard to describe. Was it a work of evil or good? Was it sick or twisted? It's like author leaves it up to you to decide or they want to keep you up at night mulling over the story. I really wanna read more from this author.
theorizing is a hobby of mine....
my theory:
Alice is in the Land of Forgotten Things because a long time ago, she was murdered or somehow killed in some natural disaster or accident and her body is never found and is thus forgotten. Or she is abandoned somewhere and she is forgotten, and unable to be found, she dies in that hidden place. Either way, because of the condition of her body being "forgotten" is met, she slips into this "forgotten wonderland" There's no humans or living animals to be seen, but you can see body parts scattered throughout the land--especially in the graveyard. This could also further imply that humans--if forgotten, can slip into this world.
Then she meets her old friend, "Bunny II." As the speak of the past in the graveyard, the background becomes more ominous. When Alice apologizes for throwing him away, behind her are several, cracked mirrors held up by hands that show a completely black bunny. This symbolizes his true, warped feelings/mind(damaged from him being abandoned by someone he thought would love and care for him forever). Bunny II says that FROM THIS POINT ON he KNOWS that she will NEVER FORGET HIM, which we all know isn't guaranteed....unless he plots to keep her there. There are hands and candles behind him and a smiling Alice. He wants to return to the time when her smile was always directed at him. The sky is shown to be warping like ripples on water. The bunny places his hands on her shoulder and tells her that he's sure her words are no lie. It feels as if she were to go back on her word she might be put in danger. She hesitates, then looks him in the eyes and confirms his words.
This is very strange because she should have no strong attachment to something that was once inanimate that she abandoned long ago. She looked nervous and uncomfortable at first, like she wants to leave, but in the end decides to stay with the bunny. The bunny or the world or both must have some type of hypnotic effect on alice to make her "want to stay" or manipulate her feelings of "wanting to be remembered." Or she felt the tension coming from the bunny so she felt pressured to submit to his expectations.
Either way, her decision leads to the ending, which we can tell is after a long period of time because the two now live in a giant dessert palace, with Bunny II and Alice eating a feast inside. They are talking about their nth anniversary of their reunion and Alice can't even remember cuz at some point she stopped counting. We see a corner of her face including an eye and the edges of her bangs. But then in last frame she is completely pitch black with little to no distinct body/face features like the bunny was in those cracked mirrors from earlier. Her hair has grown so long that it pools on the floor. My guess is that because she has stayed in that world for so long, her body has become like the random legs scattered throughout the land(which are also pitch black).
This reason for this is either that everyone in her original world who remembered her is gone, or she has forgotten her previous life and appearance and all she can do is remember Bunny and life in this world. They'll stay together forever and ever because they will both continue to care for each other(even though this was accomplished by underhanded magic by either the bunny, the world, or both).
