Seinen was the genre that bring Japan to the western shore. It might be a remnant of the past now. There's still a bunch of Seinen with a following: Vinland, Berserk, Ubel Blatt, Historie, Nachun, APOSIMZ, Made in Abyss, Hoseki no Kuni, Vagabond, Dorohedoro, Gunka no Baltzar.. but they pale in comparison to Shonen and endless Isekai. I think my attachment to Seinen is not purely nostalgia. Every time I read Freesia, it pull me into an almost spiritual journey. The philosophy, the characters, the artstyle, the settings, the devotion to creation, they were all astounding. In Ubel Blatt's betrayal always able to convey the rage so effectively, Historie's the sudden outburst of emotion as the ship leaving and the painful truth is forever lasting, Vinland's way to ask questions about life, death and circle of hatred in the melancholic cold air of the north is unrivalled, Berserk's Golden Age journey encapsulate the various facets of its world beautifully, Nachun's characters eyes filled with hidden emotion and secrets grips my heart, Hoseki no Kuni extremely unique presentation and framing makes following every frame a joy, Dorohedoro's attitude to life. death and joy is always a treat amidst the dusty, dark town. Each of them are so unique, so different and yet equally gripping. I don't think Western comics could ever offer this variety at the same time. Perhaps this is the last light before the eternal night or perhaps this is the beginning of a return to form. I hope young authors continue the path that their predecessors have laid.
