Firstly, that seems to be Narita International Airport, which has a very controversial origin.
Second, they're on a Japan Airlines 747-400 (with livery similar to the late 80s) which had a range of 13,490km and the distance between Tokyo and LA is ~8755km, so it could make it to the west coast nonstop.
In fact here's a JAL brochure showing nonstop travel to LA, SF and Vancouver.
However if they're flying to NY they would stop in Anchorage but they didn't technically need to as NY to Tokyo is still only ~10800km.
In fact there used to be a nonstop Harita-JFK route during this same time period but it was flown with the 747-200 (which actually has a shorter range that the 400) that was almost 13 hrs.
Tokyo to LA could be as short as 10 hrs but flight times depend on direction of travel. Going west adds 1-2 hrs
